Edward Joseph, an analyst and former leader of the International Crisis group in Macedonia, now in Washington, requested that the international community adopt a new approach to the Greek-Macedonian name dispute. He recommended that protection for the Macedonian minority in Greece should be included in future discussions.
“Greeks firmly insist that the name issue after Bucharest has become a multilateral problem. I say that is okay,” said Joseph. “If that is the case then NATO should be exploring the entire dimension of this issue, along with NATO’s Charter for good neighbourly relations. While it is doing that it should also explore if Greece fulfills this obligation, especially with regard to its treatment of minorities. The status of the Macedonian and other minorities in Greece should also be part of this discussion,” said Joseph.
“In other words, if it is what Greece insists it is, a multilateral issue, then NATO must explore the entire problem and that problem must also be understood by all NATO members,” said Joseph.
“This is a chance for Greece to think about and decide if it is a good approach and a fair and sensible one, which will protect the Macedonian identity,” said Joseph.

Поранешниот шеф на Меѓународната кризна група во Македонија, Едвард Џозеф, сега од Вашингтон порачува дека меѓународната заедница треба со нов пристап да се вклучи во спорот, да се бара заштита на македонското малцинство во Грција.
„Грчките тврдења дека по Букурешт прашањето за името е мултилатерален проблем, јас велам ОК“, изјави Едвард Џозеф, аналитичар.
„Ако е така, НАТО нека ја испита целата димензија на проблемот, сосе обврската од Повелбата на НАТО за добри односи со соседите и да се види дали Грција ги исполнува овие услови, каков е статусот на македонското малцинство и другите малцинства во Грција и да го вклучи и ова во дискусијата“, рече Џозеф.
„Со други зборови, ако е тоа како што инсистира Грција, мултилатерален проблем, НАТО треба да го отвори целиот проблем и да се испита од сите членки на НАТО“, вели Едвард Џозеф.
„Тоа е начин Грција добро да размисли дали е тоа добар пристап и разумен и фер компромис, кој ќе го зачува македонскиот идентитет“, додаде Џозеф.
